The problem

The Garden Room is the terrace of ATLAS at the St. Regis Atlanta, run as a brand and an experience of its own: lush, a little playful, with craft cocktails, wine and a chef-driven menu of small plates. Sharing a building with ATLAS meant it had to be its own place and still sit comfortably next to a restaurant holding a very high standard.

The constraint

A new venue has no history to lean on. It needs to feel like it has always been there on the first night, and it has to do that online before anyone walks in.

The decisions

For the name, we went back to typefaces from the early and middle of the twentieth century and redrew them for now. The goal was understated elegance that would still look right in twenty years. The website was built around a custom scroll that walks visitors into the room, so the atmosphere arrives before the reservation does.

The last ten percent 99

The pace of the website's scroll. It lets the room arrive slowly, the way it does when you walk in from the street, instead of all at once like a menu. Nobody thinks about the pacing. They just feel like they've already been there.

What changed

The Garden Room opened as a place of its own, and it sits comfortably next to a Michelin-starred neighbor without borrowing from it.
