The problem

NEXUS holds private clubs in New York, London and St Andrews, a resort community in the Bahamas, a residential club community in Palm Beach County, and a handful of restaurants and social venues. Each one has its own audience, its own history and its own team. Members move between them. The question was how a collection this varied could feel like it belonged to one owner without any single place losing what made it worth joining.

The constraint

None of these brands could be flattened. Albany is not an urban London club, and nobody wanted it to be. Every asset also had people, budgets and deadlines of its own, so a standard imposed from the top would have been ignored by Friday.

The decisions

NEXUS grew out of Tavistock Group, and I built its brand in 2014, when it formally became a collection of its own. Then I spent the years since building the structure around it. The biggest decision was where the work gets made. NEXUS Studio is the in-house team that now produces roughly 90 percent of the portfolio's marketing and communication, with each brand and location run as its own project and its own standards. One studio, many voices, and someone close enough to every brief to catch drift before it ships.

The second decision was to treat the systems members touch as part of the brand. A membership brand makes one promise: we know you. That promise is kept or broken in the member records and the follow-up email, so I pulled that layer into the brand work too.

The last ten percent 99

There is no finished version of NEXUS. Every new brief, every season and every property that joins the collection is another chance to close the gap between ninety and ninety-nine. The work is staying close enough to every brief to catch the word that's slightly off or the photograph that's almost right, and fixing it before it ships. Nobody outside notices. That's the point.

What changed

Very different places now read as one owner, and roughly 90 percent of what the collection publishes is made by the team inside it.

The job hasn't changed: keep every place fully itself, and keep all of them recognizably part of the same family.
